WI Land+Water Youth Education Poster and Speaking Contest (posted September 11, 2024)
The poster and speaking contest event was created to educate and inspire children about conservation and environmental concepts.
Contest Format
- County Contest: Entries due January 9th to the Land Conservation Department at the Resource Center, 827 Clermont St, Antigo, WI 54409. Posters and speeches will be judged on January 19th at the Eau Claire River Room in the Resource Center, 827 Clermont St, Antigo, WI 54409. Awards for posters and speeches will be after all speeches are given on the 19th. First place winners will advance to the Area Contest.
- Area Contest: January 30th at Conference Rooms 1&2, Portage County Annex, 1426 Strongs Ave, Stevens Point, WI 54481. First place winners here move onto the state Contest
- State Contest: March 5th at the KI Center, Green Bay, WI . First place winners at this contest move to the National Contest at the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) annual meeting.
Poster Contest
The poster contest has 5 divisions
1. Primary: Grades K-1
2. Elementary: Grades 2-3
3. Middle: Grades 4-6
4. Junior: Grades 7-9
5. Senior 10-12
Rules
- Poster size must be 12" x 18: or 14" x 22"
- The theme slogan must be on the poster, "Home is where the Habitat is"
- Poster should be create by an individual, not a team
- All types of media accepted such as paint, crayons, colored pencils, markers, charcol
- Computer-generated posters will not be accepted
Judging
- The poster will be judged on the conservation message, visual effectiveness, originality, universal appeal, and individual artwork
- Poster applicants awards will be given out on January 19th in the Eau Claire River Room at the Resource Center, 827 Clermont St, Antigo, WI 54409

Speaking Contest
The speaking contest consists of three divisions
1. Elementary: Grades 5-6 that are required to create a 3-5 minute speech
2. Junior: Grades 7-8 that are required to create a 4-6 minute speech
3. Senior: Grades 9-12 that are required to create 5-7 minute speech
3. Senior: Grades 9-12 that are required to create 5-7 minute speech
Speeches must promote the conservation of natural resources and the protection or enhancement of environmental quality. Topics should address soil and water conservation issues. Emphasis should be placed on the subject as it relates to your locality or to the state of Wisconsin. Authenticity and accuracy of information is important, and the speaker should demonstrate familiarity with the subject matter. Feel free to contact Natural Resource professionals as they can provide knowledge on numerous topics. The internet is a rich resource, however not all internet sources are reliable. When using the internet consider your source. All speeches should be backed up by facts. Both sides of an issue should be presented in a fair and non-accusatory manner.
Rules:
- Use of visual aids (posters, charts, etc.) is prohibited; however, notes may be used.
- A speech, in part or whole, used in this contest in previous years may not be used again. However, speeches used for other speaking events may be used. Group presentations are not allowed.
- Using names of people or businesses for slander will not be accepted and shall result in disqualification
- The speeches will be judged on the content, delivery, and style (speech oganization and audience appeal).
- Speaker must give their speeches to a panel of judges and be awarded on January 16th in the Eau Claire River Room at the Resource Center, 827 Clermont St, Antigo, WI 54409
- Judges may ask question after the speech to guage the knowledge level of the speaker on their topic

All entry forms need to be mailed or dropped of to the Land Conservation Department at the Resource Center, 837 Clermont St, Antigo, WI 54409 by January 9th.
